The Common wombat (picture courtesy of Womland, used with permission)
If you don't know what a wombat is, then you've come to the right place. We have articles about the wombat's behavior, Diet, Physical Characteristics, and Life Cycle, as well as picture galleries and an extensive list of links.
Wombats are large burrowing mammals found only in Australia. Being rather timid and primarily nocturnal, they're difficult to observe in their natural habitat and haven't been well studied. They weren't even noticed by European settlers for ten years.
Information is somewhat scarce, and what there is, is often contradictory. Facts were gathered from a number of sources, so differing viewpoints are included where appropriate. For a complete list of sources, see the reference page.
The unprecedented bushfires in Victoria, Australia, have taken a horrendous toll in human life and property damage, and have had a devastating effect on the native wildlife, including Common Wombats. You can help by donating online to Wildlife Victoria's Urgent Bushfire Appeal. You can also mail in your donations to Help For Wildlife. If you live in or near the areas affected by the bushfires, you can take these steps to help the wild animals.
Wombat Day, October 22, is over for another year. But you can bake a Wombat Cake any time of the year and have your own Wombat Day party. Any day is a good day for a chocolate wombat cake.
